A Few Preliminary Observations on a Fertiliser Experiment on Sugar Cane

چکیده
The experiment was laid down on October 3rd, 1932, at Hazara Estate, Kearsney, the property of The .pH gives an idea of the "force" .of .the free acids in the soil, but one can easily understand that two different soils, with different physica-l properties but the same degree of acidity in terms of pH, will not react in the same manner to identical lime treatment; for example, sandy soils poor in colloids and ,:ery clayey soils. This indicates a necessity of determining the buffer capacity.' To further illustrate this point the following figures were obtained by Dr. Orchard, Chemist at Cedara, on a red soil type; Y;; acre plots having received applications of agricultural lime showed that only applications of two and four tons improved the pH value at all:-

The Sasex Fertiliser Advisory Service: over 40 Years' Service to the South African Sugar Industry
In South Africa, as in most other sugarcane growing countries, efficient fertiliser practices have contributed greatly to sugarcane productivity. The South African Sugar Association Experiment Station (SASEX) Fertiliser Advisory Service (FAS), which has been operating for more than 40 years, has played a major role in providing cost effective recommendations to cane producers and in minimising ...
متن کاملEconomic Fertiliser Recommendations for Sugarcane
Fertiliser recommendations for sugarcane are made with a view to achieving maximum probable yields based on response data derived from decades of research by the South African Sugar Association Experiment Station (SASEX). Adaptations are made according to the experience and knowledge of consultants, but the risks of under or over fertilising are seldom quantified in monetary terms. To address t...
متن کاملA Summary of Some Fertiliser Effects On
Recently there has been a definite trend on the sugar belt of Natal towards testing out the effect on the yield of cane of much heavier dressings of nitrogen, phosphates and potash than have hitherto been customary in this country. Some success has already been experienced, but at the same time it must be remembered that the soil of the sugar belt forms no exception to the rest of the country a...
متن کاملThe Impact of Trash Management on Soil Carbon and Nitrogen: I Modelling Long-term Experimental Results in the South African Sugar Industry
Trash blankets contain substantial amounts of nitrogen (N) and other nutrients. The availability of N in trash is complicated because most of the N cycles through the soil organic matter. To gain insights into the long-term fate of N contained in trash, N dynamics in the SASEX long-term trash management experiment (BT1) were simulated with the APSIM-Sugarcane cropping systems model. Initially, ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Soil Fertility and Nutrition on Sugarcane Quality: a Review
The fertility status of the soil and the standard of fertiliser management can have an important effect on the chemical composition and quality of cane juice. Both nutrient deficiency and nutrient excess can result in below optimum sucrose contents. Excessive potassium uptake may promote cane lodging and high potassium levels in juice can also influence the exhaustibility of final molasses, the...
